Background of the Study

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly being used by Human Resources (HR) firms to enhance the hiring process. AI-powered tools can analyze resumes, assess candidates’ suitability for roles, and even predict the likelihood of success in certain positions (Harrison & Khan, 2024). By automating repetitive tasks, these technologies can help HR professionals make faster, data-backed decisions. However, AI-powered hiring systems also raise significant ethical concerns regarding fairness, bias, privacy, and transparency.

HR firms in Gombe State are incorporating AI-powered tools to improve the efficiency of their hiring processes. While AI promises to reduce human error and bias, it also risks amplifying existing prejudices if not properly managed. This review examines the ethical challenges HR firms face when using AI-powered systems in hiring decisions, focusing on issues such as algorithmic bias, discrimination, transparency, and accountability in Gombe State.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the growing use of AI in recruitment processes, HR firms in Gombe State face challenges in ensuring that their AI-powered systems are fair, transparent, and unbiased (Yakubu & Gimba, 2023). Without proper oversight, AI algorithms may inadvertently perpetuate biases related to gender, race, or socioeconomic background, resulting in discriminatory hiring practices. The ethical implications of AI-powered hiring systems are yet to be fully addressed in Gombe State, and there is a need to critically review these issues within the local context.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the ethical considerations HR firms in Gombe State must address when using AI-powered hiring systems.

  2. To evaluate the impact of AI-powered hiring systems on fairness and bias in the recruitment process.

  3. To recommend best practices for ensuring ethical AI implementation in hiring processes by HR firms in Gombe State.

Research Questions

  1. What are the main ethical considerations when using AI-powered systems for hiring decisions in HR firms in Gombe State?

  2. How do AI-powered hiring systems impact fairness and bias in the recruitment process?

  3. What best practices can HR firms in Gombe State adopt to ensure the ethical use of AI in recruitment?

Research Hypotheses

  1. There is no significant relationship between the use of AI-powered hiring systems and fairness in the recruitment process.

  2. AI-powered hiring systems do not significantly contribute to bias in the recruitment process.

  3. Best practices for ethical AI implementation do not significantly reduce the ethical risks associated with AI in hiring decisions.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This review focuses on the ethical implications of AI-powered hiring decisions within HR firms in Gombe State. Limitations include access to proprietary data from HR firms and the diverse nature of AI tools used across firms.

Definitions of Terms

  • AI-Powered Hiring Systems: Technology-driven recruitment tools that use AI algorithms to analyze candidate data and make hiring recommendations.

  • Ethical Considerations: The principles and guidelines that govern the moral implications of AI use, ensuring fairness, transparency, and accountability.

  • Algorithmic Bias: The presence of prejudices in the output of AI systems due to biased data or design.
